Shinnoki Smoked Walnut in Austin’s Stealth House

STEALTH HOUSE: A PRIVATE URBAN PROTOTYPE ROOTED IN MATERIALITY

The Stealth House in Austin redefines urban living through privacy, inward focus, and durable materials. Designed by Specht Novak, this award-winning home turns away from the street and toward two interior courtyards. At the heart of the interior palette is Shinnoki Smoked Walnut. Its depth, durability, and sustainable sourcing made it the right choice for this thoughtful project.

Located on a narrow alley lot in downtown Austin, the Stealth House reveals little from the outside. A corten steel facade with no street-facing windows protects privacy. Inside, however, the space opens to light, landscape, and calm. The result is a compact residence that feels expansive and grounded at once.

AN INWARD-FOCUSED DESIGN FOR MODERN CITY LIVING

The Stealth House draws inspiration from historic courtyard dwellings. References include the Roman domus and the Moroccan riad. Life centers around interior gardens rather than street views. This approach creates control over light, air, and privacy.

Floor-to-ceiling glass surrounds two lush courtyards. One frames a mature olive tree. The other forms a quiet aviary with bamboo. Sunlight filters through the greenery and into every room. Each space connects to nature without exposure to neighboring homes.

Architect Scott Specht and co-owner Shiraz Bakshai reexamined what makes a home feel open. They prioritized sanctuary over spectacle.

“Everything about this house is built to last, there’s no waste, no unnecessary spaces. Just the essentials, done really well.”

SHINNOKI SMOKED WALNUT: A FOUNDATION OF WARMTH

Material selection played a central role in the Stealth House. Decospan’s Shinnoki Smoked Walnut anchors the interior with a deep brown tone and a refined grain. The prefinished veneer panels offer consistency across surfaces, which was critical in a compact plan.

The smoked walnut finish introduces richness without heaviness. Its subtle vertical grain creates visual height and calm. In a home defined by restraint, this wood provides warmth and character.

Shinnoki panels are available as veneer sheets, ready-to-use panels, laminates, and matching edge banding. That flexibility allowed the design team to maintain continuity across millwork and built-ins. The result feels cohesive and deliberate.

OFF-THE-SHELF EFFICIENCY WITH LASTING QUALITY

The Stealth House relied on carefully selected off-the-shelf materials. This decision supported a modest budget while maintaining architectural integrity. Shinnoki Smoked Walnut aligned perfectly with that strategy.

Because Shinnoki is prefinished, it reduces on-site labor and finishing time. The consistent format simplifies fabrication for millworkers. Panels arrive ready for installation, which improves predictability during construction.

Durability also mattered. Shinnoki Smoked Walnut is scratch-resistant and spill-protected. Deep brushing enhances texture while preserving performance. Decospan’s mixmatch technology ensures a harmonious surface without repetition.

In a small home where every surface is visible, that level of control makes a difference.

SUSTAINABLE MATERIALS FOR A 100-YEAR HOUSE

Sustainability guided the Stealth House from start to finish. The building envelope is super-insulated. A rooftop photovoltaic array with battery backup supplies most of the annual energy demand. Courtyards support daylighting and natural ventilation.

Material sourcing was equally important. Shinnoki wood veneers come from responsibly managed forests. Decospan’s commitment to environmental stewardship aligns with the house’s long-term vision.

The absence of perimeter windows reduces heat gain and loss. Roof runoff irrigates the interior gardens. Each decision reflects careful planning.

Shinnoki Smoked Walnut has an EPD and contributes to that philosophy. Its durable surface extends lifecycle performance. Its prefinished quality reduces waste during installation. The wood adds natural depth while supporting the project’s environmental goals.

AWARD-WINNING DESIGN WITH MATERIAL INTENT

The Stealth House has earned significant recognition. It received an award from AIA National and an Architizer A+Award, along with honors from AIA Austin. These accolades reflect both architectural clarity and material execution.

Shinnoki Smoked Walnut plays a quiet yet essential role in that success. The veneer enhances the interior’s sensory experience. It supports the courtyard concept by reinforcing warmth and enclosure. At the same time, it meets practical demands for durability and consistency.

For architects and designers seeking a balance between performance and character, this project offers a clear example. The Stealth House demonstrates how prefinished wood veneer can support privacy, sustainability, and budget awareness without sacrificing design intent.

In Austin’s Stealth House, Shinnoki Smoked Walnut proves that material discipline strengthens architecture. The result is a calm, resilient home built for lasting urban life.
