IIDA NY Elevates Elisabeth Mejia to President and Robin Reigi to President-Elect

A TWO-YEAR PLAN BUILT ON PARTNERSHIP

Congratulations to Elisabeth Mejia, newly elected President of the IIDA New York Chapter, and to Robin Reigi, President-Elect. Their leadership marks an exciting moment for the chapter, as the two have worked side by side for more than seven years.

Together, they are approaching this term as a true partnership, united in their commitment to equity, access, and professional development. Their shared agenda will expand opportunities for students, strengthen industry partnerships, and introduce new models of support for the chapter’s future.

HOW THE LEADERSHIP STORY BEGAN

Robin’s journey with IIDA began in 2019 when then-President Annie Lee invited her to co-chair the Design Camp Committee alongside Elisabeth Mejia. From the start, their work focused on creating opportunities for students from underrepresented backgrounds.

In 2020, Robin was elected to the Board of Directors as Co–Vice President of Student Development with Dan Villella. Elisabeth joined her in that role in 2021, and together they shaped programs that have grown steadily.

Their collaboration has been recognized with both the Change Maker Award and the Spirit Award from IIDA NY.

“This role is about continuing the work we’ve started together—supporting our members, expanding access, and keeping the chapter strong for years to come.”

ADVANCING STUDENT DEVELOPMENT

Student development has been a cornerstone of their leadership. Since 2019, they have launched and expanded programs such as:

  • Hazel Siegel Scholarship – Honoring a textile design icon by supporting emerging talent.
  • SUP (Student Uplift Program) – Providing equitable opportunities for students from all backgrounds.
  • Career Fair – Connecting students with hiring firms, now in its second year.

These efforts have led to tangible results. Five cohorts have moved from student programs into full professional membership, with some now serving in leadership roles within the chapter.

“Watching former students become active members and even leaders in the chapter is one of the most rewarding parts of this work.”

BREAKING NEW GROUND FOR IIDA

For the first time in the chapter’s 30-year history, an industry representative, not an interior designer or architect, has been elected President-Elect. This milestone reflects a broader shift toward representing every aspect of the interior design profession. Pairing industry leaders with design professionals as co-chairs has strengthened networks and broadened perspectives across the chapter.

“Representation matters. Every role in our industry contributes to the story of design, and every voice should have a place at the table.”

BUILDING ON A STRONG FOUNDATION

Robin and Elisabeth’s leadership style is rooted in collaboration. Elisabeth is leading the chapter this year, focusing on equity, access, and inclusion. As President-Elect, Robin is supporting that agenda, learning from the current term, and preparing to carry the vision forward.

This leadership pipeline is unique. It’s the first time the President has come from the Student Development team, with a Co–Vice President named as successor.

“Our shared history means we can move quickly on big ideas. We already have the trust and rhythm to lead effectively.”

LISTENING FIRST, LEADING NEXT

Over the next year, Robin will conduct a listening tour of the chapter. She plans to meet with every committee, attend weekly events, and connect with members to understand their needs and ideas.

The New York Chapter is supported by sponsorships, and attracting new sponsors depends on delivering value to both members and partners. Feedback from this listening phase will help shape future initiatives, events, and revenue strategies.

“Before you can lead well, you have to listen. This year is about hearing what our members need most and finding the best ways to support them.”

LOOKING AHEAD

The IIDA NY Chapter is a vibrant, inclusive community of creative professionals, industry partners, and students. Its mission is to celebrate design, encourage collaboration, and advocate for the interior design community.

Serving as IIDA President-Elect is both an honor and a responsibility. Robin looks forward to building on the chapter’s momentum and ensuring that it continues to grow, adapt, and lead.

“IIDA has given me so much—mentors, friendships, and a deeper understanding of our industry. Serving as President-Elect is my way of giving back.”
