How to Choose the Right Shinnoki Edge Banding
SHINNOKI EDGE BANDING
Shinnoki edge banding is a small detail with a big impact. It shapes how a panel reads, how it wears, and how closely the finished piece matches the design intent.
With Shinnoki, there are three ways to finish the edge. Each option maintains the integrity of the veneer surface, but performs differently depending on use, exposure, and level of wear.
The right choice comes down to one question: what does this edge need to do?
OPTION 1: VENEER + ABS COMBINED
A balanced solution for durability and appearance
This newer Shinnoki edge banding combines a real wood veneer surface with an ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) backing in a coordinated color. You get the warmth and variation of natural wood, with added resistance to impact and daily wear.
We typically recommend this option when:
- Furniture will be handled frequently or moved over time
- Corners and edges need added durability without sacrificing appearance
- You want a practical balance between performance and a true veneer look
The veneer delivers the visual continuity, while the ABS backing adds structure and protection where it matters.
OPTION 2: VENEER EDGE BANDING
When continuity and material expression matter most
Veneer edge banding is the most direct extension of the panel surface. A natural veneer with a paper backing follows the same grain, tone, and aging behavior as the board itself.
This is the preferred choice when:
- When the edge is highly visible, and you want the edge and surface to age together over time
- When panels are butt-joined together in a wall application.
- The goal is a seamless, full-veneer appearance
- This is also the most economical option.
In these applications, the edge doesn’t stand out. It disappears into the overall composition, creating a quieter, more refined result.
OPTION 3: ABS EDGE BANDING
For high-use environments and clean performance
ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) is a tough, rigid, and lightweight thermoplastic polymer, popular for its high impact resistance and durability.
ABS edge banding is a durable, ready-to-use solution with a printed and embossed surface matched to the Shinnoki decor. It is color-consistent throughout and requires no additional finishing.
We recommend ABS when:
- Edges are exposed to heavy use or frequent cleaning
- Moisture is a concern, such as in kitchens or commercial settings
- Consistency, durability, and ease of maintenance are priorities
It delivers a clean, stable finish that holds up in demanding conditions.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT EDGE
There’s no single “best” option, only the right one for the application.
- For seamless, design-forward work, choose veneer
- For high-performance areas, choose ABS
- For most projects, where both matter, veneer + ABS offers a smart middle ground
Getting this detail right ensures the finished piece performs as well as it looks.
